Is Your Boiler Trying to Tell You Something?

Don't ignore the warning signs. These are the most common boiler problems we see every day — and every one of them has a fix.

Banging or Knocking Sounds

Loud banging from your boiler is usually kettling — a buildup of limescale or sludge on the heat exchanger causing water to overheat and steam. Left untreated it stresses the heat exchanger and leads to costly failure.

Swishing or Gurgling Noises

Swishing, gurgling, or whooshing sounds typically mean air trapped in the system or low water pressure. Air pockets prevent proper circulation and leave radiators cold at the top while the boiler works overtime.

Heat Not Working or Inconsistent

If your boiler fires but rooms stay cold, or heat is uneven across zones, the problem could be a faulty zone valve, circulator pump failure, Tekmar control issue, or a blocked heat exchanger. We diagnose the exact cause — no guesswork.

Leaking Boiler

Water pooling around your boiler is never normal. Leaks can come from a failed pump seal, corroded pipe joint, cracked heat exchanger, or a faulty auto-fill valve. Ignoring a leak leads to water damage, mould, and eventual boiler failure.

Leak on the Relief Valve

A dripping pressure relief valve means your system pressure is too high — a serious safety issue. It could be a waterlogged expansion tank, a faulty fill valve, or the relief valve itself failing. This needs immediate attention.

Need to Adjust Boiler Temperature

If your home never reaches the right temperature, or your boiler is short-cycling (turning on and off rapidly), the controls may need recalibration. Proper Tekmar outdoor reset programming can eliminate this and cut your fuel bill significantly.

Pilot Light or Ignition Failure

A boiler that won't ignite, keeps losing its pilot light, or shows an ignition fault code needs a technician — not a YouTube fix. Ignition issues can involve the gas valve, igniter, flame sensor, or control board.

Yellow or Orange Flame

Your boiler flame should always be blue. A yellow or orange flame means incomplete combustion and possible carbon monoxide production — a life-safety emergency. Shut the boiler down and call us immediately.

Boiler Keeps Shutting Off

A boiler that repeatedly locks out or shuts itself down is protecting itself from a fault — low pressure, overheating, a blocked flue, or a sensor failure. Each lockout causes wear. Get it diagnosed before it becomes a full breakdown.

Boiler Running Constantly

A boiler that never shuts off is working too hard — usually due to undersized equipment, poor insulation, a stuck zone valve, or incorrect control settings. It drives up your gas bill and shortens equipment life.
